MADURAI: A 70-year-old man was allegedly murdered as peace talks between two families took a violent turn near Othakadai in corporation limits on Sunday evening. Another elderly man sustained grievous injuries and is undergoing treatment.
The deceased was identified as K Agni from Keelathoppor in Sellur. Police said Thangakalyani, son of Agni, had married Thamaraikodi, daughter of Packiaraj, a few years ago. The couple had two children. Recently, there were frequent fights between the two, due to which Thamaraikodi had left the house and gone to live with her family in Pudupatti village, her native place.
According to police, Agni and his wife Sandhanam, along with Thangakalyani and two of his sisters, had gone to Thamaraikodi’s house to conduct peace talks. The family attempted to cajole her into returning to her husband, but she refused. Thangakalyani and his family were reportedly angered and an argument soon broke out. As the argument became more heated, they started attacking each other. Villagers reportedly went to the house and tried to calm the families down.
Agri sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Packiaraj, 53, of Y Pudupatti near Othakadai, sustained grievous injuries and is being treated in a hospital. A case was registered with Othakadai police station and investigation was conducted. Thamaraikodi’s brother, Muthuprakash, 25, was arrested and cases were booked against Packiaraj, his wife and two other sons.
